What is psoriasis?
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disorder of the skin results in hyper
proliferation of the skin. It is a chronic skin disease characterized by dry
skin and raised, rough, red areas on the skin covered with fine silvery scales.
Psoriasis is non-infectious and it is often seen in people between 15 to 40
years of age.
Causes of Psoriasis:
The exact cause of psoriasis is not known. It is believed that a
combination of several factors contributes to the development of this disease.
Some common causes
of psoriasis are the following:
- Psoriasis occurs when the immune system overreacts, causing inflammation and flaking of skin.
- Abnormality in the mechanism in which the skin grows and replaces itself causes psoriasis.
- Psoriasis develops when the immune system tells the body to over-react and accelerate the growth of skin cells.
- Heredity also plays a role in the development of psoriasis
- Environmental factors such as trauma, sunlight, infection, emotional stress, climatic changes etc also cause.
Ayurveda and psoriasis:
Coming to the treatment aspects
of Psoriasis according to Ayurveda, it aims at the detoxification of the body
or elimination of toxins from the body fluids. It is achieved by "Panchakarma"
treatments.
Panchakarma:
Panchakarma is Ayurveda's primary purification and detoxification
treatment. Panchakarma means "five therapies". These 5 therapeutic
treatments eliminate toxins from the body, they are : Vamana, Virechana, Nasya,
Basti and Raktamoskshana. The series of these five therapies help remove deep
rooted stress and illness-causing toxins from the body while balancing the doshas
(energies that govern all biological functions).
Panchakarma Diet:
Panchakarma is effective only if special detoxification diet
is consumed along with the treatments. We at Ayurveda Retreat are very aware of
this and every individual undergoing Panchakarma receives special diet which is
monitored every day by the doctor. Additional treatments may be recommended by
the doctor and provided at no extra charge.
Vamana:
Vamana is a medicated emesis therapy which removes Kapha toxins
collected in the body and the respiratory tract. This is given to people with
high Kapha imbalance. Daily treatment involves loosening and mobilizing the
toxins in an effort to finally eliminate them.
Benefits of Vamana: Bronchial Asthma, Chronic Allergies, Hay Fever, Vitiligo, Psoriasis, Hyperacidity, Chronic Indigestion Nasal Congestion, Edema, Obesity, Psychological disorders, Skin disorders.

Basti (Enema
or Colonic Irrigation):
Basti (Enema) is considered as the mother of all Panchakarma
treatments. It cleanses the accumulated toxins from all the 3 doshas : Vata,
Pitta and Kapha, through the colon. Basti is also highly beneficial as a
rejuvenating treatment. Medicated oil or ghee and an herbal decoction is given
as enema to clean the colon and increase the muscle tone. This treatment is

due to the high risk of infection involved in blood cleansing.
Natural treatment
for psoriasis:
Useful
herb/natural remedies for psoriasis:
Aloe Vera:
Gel from the aloe plant (which
is related to the cactus) can be applied to the skin up to three times a day.
Some research shows it can help reduce redness and scaling associated with
psoriasis. Look for creams containing 0.5% aloe. No benefit has been shown
from taking aloe in tablet form and it can be dangerous.
Apple Cider Vinegar:
Used by ancient cultures as a disinfectant, apple cider vinegar may help
relieve scalp itch from psoriasis. You can buy a bottle of organic apple cider
vinegar at the grocery store and apply it to your scalp several times a week.
Some people report diluting vinegar with water on a 1-to-1 ratio helps prevent
a burning sensation. Others say they need to rinse the skin once the solution
has dried to prevent irritation. Skip this cheap remedy if your scalp skin is
cracked or bleeding. If you have open wounds, vinegar will only irritate your
skin and cause a burning sensation. If it works for you, you should see results
within a few weeks.
Tea tree oil:
Tea tree oil is
from the leaves of a plant that is native to Australia. Tea tree oil is
believed to have antiseptic qualities and can be applied to the skin. Some
people find using shampoos with tea tree oil helps relieve their scalp
psoriasis. However, there are no scientific studies to prove the effectiveness
of tea tree oil on psoriasis. Use tea tree oil with care as some people may be
allergic to it.
Turmeric:
This herb is being
frequently studied for its powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant
properties. Curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric also has the ability to
alter gene expression. A 2012
review by the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular biology
highlights turmeric's ability to alter TNF cytokine expression. This is the
likely reason some patients find it helpful in minimizing psoriasis and psoriatic
arthritis flares. You can take turmeric concentrated in pill or supplement form
or if you like curries, adding it liberally to your food. The FDA considers 1.5
to 3.0 grams of turmeric per day to be safe. However, we suggest that you
consult with a naturopathic practitioner for help in determining the correct
dosage for you.
Bitter gourd juice:
Regular consumption of this bitter juice has also been known to improve psoriasis condition and other fungal infections like ring-worm and athletes feet.
