Gynecomastia is swelling of the breast tissue in boys or men, caused by an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and testosterone. Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts, sometimes unevenly. Newborns, boys going through puberty and older men may develop gynecomastia as a result of normal changes in hormone levels, though other causes also exist.
Generally, gynecomastia isn't a serious problem, but it can be tough to cope with the condition. Men and boys with gynecomastia sometimes have pain in their breasts and may feel embarrassed.
Gynecomastia may go away on its own. If it persists, medication or surgery may help.

Causes

Gynecomastia is triggered by a decrease in the amount of the hormone testosterone compared with estrogen. The cause of this decrease can be conditions that block the effects of or reduce testosterone or a condition that increases your estrogen level. Several things can upset the hormone balance, including the following.

Natural hormone changes

The hormones testosterone and estrogen control the development and maintenance of sex characteristics in both men and women. Testosterone controls male traits, such as muscle mass and body hair. Estrogen controls female traits, including the growth of breasts.
Most people think of estrogen as an exclusively female hormone, but men also produce it — though normally in small quantities. However, male estrogen levels that are too high or are out of balance with testosterone levels can cause gynecomastia.
  • Gynecomastia in infants. More than half of male infants are born with enlarged breasts due to the effects of their mother's estrogen. Generally, the swollen breast tissue goes away within two to three weeks after birth.
  • Gynecomastia during puberty. Gynecomastia caused by hormone changes during puberty is relatively common. In most cases, the swollen breast tissue will go away without treatment within six months to two years.
  • Gynecomastia in men. The prevalence of gynecomastia peaks again between the ages of 50 and 69. At least 1 in 4 men in this age group are affected.

Home remedies:

1. Cold Compress

A cold compress using ice cubes can relieve tender breasts in men reducing its size. The cooling effect of ice will contract the breast tissues which will result in a tightening effect. Cold compress would also relieve pain and swelling associated with gynecomastia. For this remedy, put some cubes of ice in a cloth and tie it. Apply it on your breasts for a minute. Do this remedy whenever you feel tenderness and pain.

2. Turmeric

Turmeric is widely used to treat gynecomastia in a natural way. Turmeric boosts the level of the hormone, testosterone, in men and reduces the breast size. Turmeric also aids in burning more fat. For this remedy, take a cup of water and add 1-2 tsp of powdered turmeric. Boil the solution for at least 10 minutes and drink it 2 times during the day and once at bedtime every day. If you do not like consuming it, consider taking turmeric capsules.

3. Milk Thistle

Liver disease may cause enlargement of breasts in some individuals. If this is the case for you, milk thistle may help you get rid of your liver issues. It improves liver functioning and reduces the breast size caused by your defective liver in an effective way. Crush 1 tbsp of milk thistle seeds and add it to about 3 cups of water. Bring it to boil and steep for 18-20 minutes after removing from heat. Strain it into a glass and add a dash of honey. Drink it twice every day for several weeks to relieve the liver symptoms.

4. Flaxseed

Flaxseeds are high in omega-3 fatty acids which boosts testosterone and prevents enlargements of the breasts in males. Ground a tablespoon of flaxseed and add it to a glass of warm water. Consume it once every day for visible results. You may also consume flaxseed oil (1-2 tablespoons) along with your meals for several weeks.

5. Fish Oil

Fish oil is another rich source of omega-3 fatty acids which may help in reducing the breast size. Omega-3 fatty acids reduce the level of estrogen which is one of the biggest cause of enlarged breasts in men. You can either take fish oil or omega-3 supplements in recommended doses after consulting your doctor. Including fish high in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, mackerel, and tuna in your diet is also helpful.

6. Avoid Alcohol

If you are dealing with gynecomastia, you should completely avoid the consumption of alcohol. Alcohol promotes the production of estrogen and may significantly worsen your condition. Besides, excessive consumption of alcohol is harmful to your overall health. Therefore, to prevent further enlargement of the breast, you must completely avoid it.

7. Green Tea

Green tea is packed with antioxidants that detoxify the body. Additionally, green tea helps in burning fat easily. Therefore, it may reduce the fat that contributes to larger breasts. Boil a cup of water and add dried green tea leaves to it. Cover it and let it steep for a few minutes. Strain the liquid and consume it on a regular basis to maintain an ideal weight.
